Compare Hamilton Island to Whitehaven Beach trips
The Hamilton Island to Whitehaven Beach choice here is between a six-and-a-half-hour boat trip with guided reef snorkeling and a four-hour beach-and-lookout outing. Both depart from Hamilton Island, include Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, and use a Front Street meeting point. Choose the longer programme for the reef activity and picnic lunch, or the shorter one when the beach and northern viewpoint are the priorities.
These are excursions with activities and time ashore. Their durations describe the whole programme, rather than a boat crossing from island to island. Plan around the stated meeting and return arrangements, keeping the walking and beach sections in the day instead of treating the ticket as a simple ferry passage.

Our take
The longer trip adds guided reef snorkeling and a picnic lunch. Choose the shorter visit for Whitehaven and Hill Inlet with a guided walk.

The longer Hamilton departure adds guided coral reef snorkeling and a picnic lunch; the shorter trip focuses on Whitehaven and Hill Inlet.
A longer day with guided reef snorkeling
The six-and-a-half-hour excursion includes Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout, a guided national park walk and a personalized coral reef snorkeling tour. An eco host accompanies the programme. Morning tea, afternoon tea and a picnic lunch are included, along with a sunsuit and flotation device. It suits visitors who want both the beach landscape and a separate reef activity within the same island departure.
Keep the reef and sand sections distinct when imagining the day. Whitehaven beach time is not a promise of coral across the entire sandy frontage. The snorkeling element is a separate part of the programme, and a guided activity still depends on local conditions and the participant being comfortable with the requirements.
Bring a reusable bottle and plan drinking water. Water is excluded from the included drinks, although a refill station is available for your own bottle. Soft drinks, juice, beer, cider and chocolate are extra, as is prescription mask hire. The picnic lunch should therefore not be read as a general drinks package.
Four hours focused on beach and lookout
The four-hour outing includes Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the Hill Inlet Lookout, with a guided national park walk and an eco host. Morning or afternoon tea, a sunsuit and flotation devices are included. It is the more focused choice if the purpose is to step onto the sand and see the northern inlet landscape without adding the longer reef programme.
The shorter trip does not include a promised snorkeling session. Choose it for its beach and walking elements, rather than expecting the equipment and itinerary of the longer excursion. Bring your own bottle for the onboard refill station; water, other listed drinks, chocolate and prescription mask hire are outside the inclusions. A tea break is different from the picnic lunch included with the longer trip.
Hill Inlet and the tide
Tongue Point lies north of Hill Inlet, with access from Tongue Bay or Lookout Beach. Lower water can reveal the curving sand patterns, while QPWS describes mid or high tide for boat access. A low-water photograph and a workable landing plan are separate considerations. The crew arrangements and conditions on the day determine how the visit fits together.
The inlet has strong currents and rapidly rising water. Follow the guided walking route rather than trying to cross the water or link the southern beach and Tongue Point yourself. The Southern Whitehaven Lookout is a different destination from Hill Inlet, so use the names when comparing any alternatives.
The park notice published on 20 October 2026 announces partial maintenance from 30 November to 4 December 2026 at Tongue Point. Some platforms, boardwalks and day areas may close temporarily, with at least one lookout open and brief toilet closures. The notice does not describe a complete Whitehaven closure.
Hamilton Island as a base and the meeting point
The Front Street meeting point for these excursions is distinct from the airport jetty. For the island-transfer service, that airport jetty is reserved for passengers with a flight connection; other passengers use Hamilton Island Marina. Follow the excursion confirmation for the actual check-in location rather than treating an airport boat connection as the start of this beach tour.
For the wider island setting, see the Whitsunday Islands. The Whitehaven access guide separates the airport and boat stages, while the Airlie Beach comparison is for visitors choosing a mainland start. Staying on Hamilton and choosing an island departure keeps those planning decisions aligned.
Prepare for the beach and water
Safety guidance checked on 5 November 2026 includes unpatrolled water, unreliable mobile reception and year-round jellyfish, shark and crocodile hazards. QPWS advises against swimming. A sunsuit and flotation aid are useful equipment inclusions, with no complete protection promise. Carry sun protection and drinking water, and read the stinger and safety guide before choosing water activities.
