Whitehaven Beach Accommodation: Camping or Staying Afloat

Whitehaven Beach accommodation planning starts with a choice: carry your own camping supplies, sleep aboard a sailing boat or return to a mainland or island base.

Choosing Whitehaven Beach accommodation for your visit

Whitehaven Beach accommodation is a decision about how you want to spend the night around your beach visit. Camping puts your tent behind the sand on Whitsunday Island and requires self-sufficiency. An overnight sailing trip provides a berth aboard a boat with its own route and included services. A mainland or Hamilton Island base lets you visit Whitehaven as an excursion and return afterwards.

Start with the type of night you want, then organise the transport that makes it possible. For camping, the boat to the camping area needs arranging before the permit. For sailing, the departure marina and nights aboard belong to the chosen trip. For a land base, match your location to the Airlie Beach departures or Hamilton Island excursions. This keeps the sleeping arrangement and the beach journey part of the same practical plan.

Whitehaven Beach camping: permits and the designated area

The camping area has ten designated sites, including a group area, with a maximum of 36 people. Sites are on sand and earth behind the beach. Facilities include hybrid toilets and a shared covered picnic table. Think of this as a simple camping arrangement where your food, water and equipment form an essential part of the booking decision.

Organise camper transport before booking the permit. Then reserve and pay for the camping permission before arrival and display the permit tag on your tent or equipment. Keep the confirmation with your travel documents. The permit reserves camping permission; arrange the boat journey separately. Select the nights around the agreed landing and collection arrangements rather than treating an ordinary beach excursion as camper transport.

Fees valid from 1 July 2026 are 7.75 AUD per person per night for adults and children aged five or older. Children under five stay free. The family rate is 31 AUD per night for one or two adults with accompanying children under 18, up to eight people in total. These are camping fees, separate from the price of reaching the island and from any tour you choose.

The camping area is open 24 hours, with arrival at the site after 14:00 and departure by 11:00. These are camping arrangements, so use them to organise your booked stay rather than as general beach opening hours. QPWS recommends booking popular camping places ahead, especially during school breaks. Make the reservation part of the preparation, together with the transport, instead of relying on finding a spare site after arrival.

What to bring and how to use the area

Bring food, fresh water, insect repellent and a gas or fuel stove. Open fires and generators are prohibited, and rubbish must return to the mainland with you. Clean clothing, footwear and camping equipment of soil, seeds and insects before travelling. Drones are prohibited in protected-area camping grounds; keep any carried drone safely stored in its container on the boat.

Safety information checked on 5 November 2026 calls for shade and at least two litres of drinking water per person per day, with additional water for campers' cooking and washing. There are no lifeguards and mobile reception is unreliable. QPWS recommends communication preparation such as a PLB, EPIRB or satellite phone. Work through the water and stinger safety guidance as part of the camping plan.

Two nights aboard instead of a tent

The sailing option featured here runs for three days with two nights aboard, starting at Coral Sea Marina on Shingley Drive in Airlie Beach. Its Whitehaven visit and Hill Inlet walk form part of the itinerary. Meals, a wetsuit, snorkelling equipment, daily island and snorkelling site fees, and the crew or skipper are included. Drinks, snacks and parking are additional costs.

This suits a visit built around sailing and separate snorkelling stops, with sleeping aboard rather than managing a tent and camping supplies. The berth is part of the sailing trip. For more choice between day sails and nights at sea, use the Whitehaven sailing comparison. The weather and tides guide helps you understand why conditions remain relevant whichever sleeping arrangement you choose.

A Whitehaven visit with two nights aboard

This three-day sailing trip includes meals, a wetsuit, snorkelling equipment and daily site fees. Accommodation is aboard the boat; arrange camping permits and camper transport separately if choosing a tent stay instead.

Mainland base: Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour

A mainland stay keeps your overnight address separate from the island excursion. Match the location to the actual boat departure, since Port of Airlie, Coral Sea Marina and Shute Harbour are different places. Read about Airlie Beach as a mainland base for the wider setting, and use the arrival and transfer guide for the chain from airport to boat.

Hamilton Island as an island base

Hamilton Island offers another base for a Whitehaven excursion with a genuine island departure. Keep your arrival airport connection and tour meeting point distinct. For the broader island setting, continue to the Whitsunday Islands. Choose the base for its place in your itinerary rather than expecting every boat to collect from every island.

Arrange camper transport first, then book and pay for the camping permit before arrival. Display the permit tag on the tent or equipment.
